Open Hearts for Orphans

What inspired you to start this business?

Open Hearts for Orphans is a ministry of beauty created out of ashes. Jim & Lisa Murphy have adopted five precious children, and their love crossed oceans for all of them. They adopted their first daughter from China in 2006 as an infant, and their second child, Daniel, joined the Murphy family in January of 2010. He was a beautiful little two-year-old boy who had been living in a Chinese orphanage with a broken heart, yet he faced every obstacle with brave determination and a smile on his face. After four months of embracing new life in the Murphy family, Daniel's heart surgery took place in May of that year, but much to their sadness, his body just couldn't recover from the open-heart surgery that he desperately needed, and he joined our eternal Father in Heaven. Daniel made a lasting imprint on many hearts in the community, and the Murphys are forever changed because of him. Lisa knew the extent of the need. With over one hundred million orphaned or abandoned children scattered all over the globe, she couldn't pretend that the orphan crisis didn't exist or that she didn't know how to help, so Open Hearts for Orphans was born in 2016 in Daniel's memory.

How does your faith shape your work?

The faith of our Board is ever present in this mission - as we pray for financial provision, and for the wisdom of partners on the ground, and for those we serve alongside our partners, and for ways to reach more desperate humans. We are constantly seeking guidance, wisdom, and discernment from the Holy Spirit as we prayerfully say yes and fund the urgent needs that are brought to us. We trust God's promptings in all of it and believe that we are divinely guided in this mission.

What's a favorite patron saint or scripture?

We look to St. Joseph - a patron for all adoptive parents. He is often referred to as the “foster father” of Jesus, and St. Joseph is the primest example of a saint who adopted a child that was not his biological son. And, James 1:27 is always present in our minds: "Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world."

What's one thing you'd like customers to know?

Open Hearts For Orphans Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization created to provide resources for orphaned and abandoned children around the world through medical intervention, meeting basic needs, and providing their "Say Yes" adoption grants to families in the process. To date, OHFO has issued over 120 adoption grants to families adopting children with special needs from twenty different countries, including the US.
