What inspired you to start this business?

Laura M. Berquist, Founder of MODG, firmly believes that homeschooling is the hope of the future, giving a formation that is both lacking and necessary in our culture.

How does your faith shape your work?

Mrs. Berquist shared, “First of all, as a Catholic I know that the Faith informs every aspect of life. I heard a sermon once in which the priest said you breathe differently because you are Catholic. I think that is true."

What's a favorite patron saint or scripture?

"Everything we do should be done with our true end in mind. I tell my students, frequently, that this life is very short. However long it is, it is very short. Eternity, on the other hand, is very, very long. Eternity is our true home and everything we do needs to be done with that goal in mind. Not only getting there, but, as St. John Henry Cardinal Newman says, making ‘new hearts’ that are focused on the things of heaven. That way, when the time comes, we will be entering a familiar place ready to take up our life there. Also, my faith helps me not to worry too much. We want to do what God wants and He often reveals His will through circumstances. So I try to just put those circumstances into His hands and see them as His will. That doesn’t mean I don’t plan or don’t respond to a new circumstance by encouraging it or addressing it. But it does mean that I see this is all in God’s hands, it is His plan, and His plan is perfect. If my plan is not His plan, then I need to change.”

Children raised in a homeschooling environment are raised to be leaders, critical thinkers, and persons oriented to eternity, formed by families willing to give themselves fully to the education of their children. Mrs. Berquist is the author of Designing Your Own Classical Curriculum and editor of The Harp and Laurel Wreath: Poetry and Dictation for the Classical Curriculum. Based on the philosophy of the classical Trivium—grammar, logic, and rhetoric—she developed a modern classical Catholic curriculum for grades K-12 that strengthens character and intellect, reinforces virtue and encourages a living Catholic culture in the home.
